A Coherent Policy Space for the Transition of Europe’s Farming Systems ENFASYS Science-Policy Workshop | 24 June 2025 | Brussels

On 24 June 2025, the ENFASYS project hosted its fourth and final policy workshop in Brussels:

“A coherent policy space for the transition of Europe’s farming systems. Findings from the EU-funded ENFASYS project.”

Organised by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the workshop brought together a wide range of stakeholders—EU policymakers, national ministry officials, researchers, farming representatives, agri-food stakeholders, and civil society—to discuss how to foster a just and robust transition toward sustainable farming systems across Europe.
Held at Atelier 29, the workshop served as a key platform for presenting project findings, reflecting on real-world case studies, and co-creating ideas for future policy design and implementation.

📍 Opening plenary

The event began with a plenary session featuring:

  • Peter Feindt (Humboldt University) – Welcome and introduction
  • Erwin Wauters (ILVO) – Overview of the ENFASYS project’s approach and findings
  • Peter Feindt – Insights from the ENFASYS policy work package, with a focus on co-design and preliminary reflections on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)

These sessions introduced participants to the project’s systemic and behavioural lens, laying the foundation for deeper discussions throughout the day.

🔍 Breakout sessions – Case Study insights

Participants then took part in three rounds of breakout sessions, each exploring 10 real-life case studies from the ENFASYS project, covering themes such as regenerative agriculture, biodiversity promotion, value chain transformation, and organic sector growth.

Each group presented highlights and lessons learned, emphasising behavioural barriers, enabling conditions, and what policies or business models helped (or hindered) sustainability transitions.

🧩 Closing session – What’s next?

In the final session, Peter Feindt offered reflections on the project’s trajectory and outlined the next steps for ENFASYS:

  • Systems analysis and co-design of policy mixes
  • Development of sustainable business models
  • National stakeholder workshops and dialogue sessions
  • Strategic contribution to EU-level policy design and benchmarks
  • Final ENFASYS event with EU policymakers

Workshop 4 marked a key milestone in the ENFASYS project’s efforts to connect science, policy, and practice. The active participation and insightful contributions of attendees highlighted the importance of multi-level collaboration to shape a farming future that is sustainable, resilient, and fair.
